2012 is the International Year of Co-operatives. It is a celebration of the pioneering spirit of ordinary people who know that working within communities and memberships is the best way to deliver their needs and aspirations.
But what does this mean to us in the English housing co-operative sector? Faced with our day to day challenges to make our co-ops and communities successful, how do we fit into the international community of co-operatives? What links us to Nicaraguan coffee co-operatives, Michigan Credit Unions promoting lending to small businesses, Sri Lankan co-operatives channelling war relief funding and Kenyan basket-weaving co-ops (all examples on the UN's International Year of Co-operatives website)?
These questions formed the central theme of this year's CCH conference. With all other forms of housing under increasing pressure to produce both sufficient numbers and quality of homes, the co-operative housing sector remains a small jewel in our national housing strategy.
