"Co-operatives are a reminder to the international community that it is possible to pursue both economic viability and social responsibility."
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
2012 is the International Year of Co-operatives. It is a celebration of the pioneering spirit of ordinary people who know that working within communities and memberships is the best way to deliver their needs and aspirations.
But what does this mean to us in the English housing co-operative sector? Faced with our day to day challenges to make our co-ops and communities successful, how do we fit into the international community of co-operatives? What links us to Nicaraguan coffee co-operatives, Michigan Credit Unions promoting lending to small businesses, Sri Lankan co-operatives channelling war relief funding and Kenyan basket-weaving co-ops (all examples on the UN's International Year of Co-operatives website)?
These questions will form the central theme of this year's CCH conference. With all other forms of housing under increasing pressure to produce both sufficient numbers and quality of homes, the co-operative housing sector remains a small jewel in our national housing strategy.
Some key issues in this year's conference include:
- what initiatives are out there to build new co-operative and mutual homes?
- are we making the best use of our assets?
- how do we welcome in new forms of co-operative and mutual housing?
- a revised and simplified version of the housing co-op accreditation programme
- a new Code of Governance for housing co-ops
- the "Mexfield" case – what does this mean for co-op tenancies?
- a new regulatory framework – what does this mean for our sector?
- how will the changing benefits system affect us?
- where now for the tenant movement in England?
- the outcomes of the review of the CCH, your representative body
You can't afford to miss this year's CCH conference – the foremost annual opportunity for networking in the co-operative & mutual housing sector - where all of the above and other issues will be discussed.
