Introduction

Rarely can there have been a more important time for members and supporters of housing co-ops and tenant management organisations to meet together:

Whilst the rest of the housing world seems to be drifting towards ever larger and more remote municipal housing, we in the community controlled housing sector know about the importance of a strong local community and the vital role it plays in meeting the aspirations of ordinary people.

There have been some interesting developments over the last few years, particularly around new models for community ownership of rented housing, that may herald a new dawn where more tenants and communities can make decisions for themselves about their homes and neighbourhoods.

But we also know that there are major challenges that face us in the community controlled housing sector. Politicians and the mainstream housing world seem not to understand the importance of the message we bring. Government support for community controlled initiatives, despite all party support for the transfer of power to communities, seems to be dipping to its lowest ebb since the 1960s. Faced with this growing political inertia, some community controlled organisations have been facing difficult challenges about how they move forward.

This joint Confederation of Co-operative Housing/National Federation of Tenant Management Organisations Annual Conference will be a key forum where we can discuss how to improve the way we operate and the future of community controlled housing.

The conference will offer a great range of workshops and plenaries on both policy and practical issues. This is a conference that is run for and by tenants and members of housing co-ops and tenant management organisations. We also welcome other housing practitioners who support the principles of tenant control and community self-help. Come along and be inspired!

Venue

The conference is being held at Yarnfield Park Training Centre, near Stone in the heart of the Staffordshire countryside. This venue is a modern purpose built conference centre with excellent facilities. All bedrooms are ensuite and easily accesible from the main building via a covered walkway. There are lifts to all upper floor rooms.
